On Wednesday, February 9th, 2022, the Delaware Valley Radio Association monthly
meeting HELD VIA VIRTUAL WEB CONFERENCE will feature a presentation titled
“Sunspot Cycle 25 – Prediction Update” by Dr. Scott McIntosh.
We have fully exited Solar Cycle 24 which was the 4th-smallest intensity since regular
record-keeping began with Solar Cycle 1 in the year 1755. The Cycle 24 solar minimum
occurred in December 2019 and we are now well into Solar Cycle 25 with peak sunspot
activity expected in 2025. Solar Cycle 25 could be the strongest since the 1960’s.
Dr. Scott McIntosh and a team of scientists led by the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (NCAR) have been predicting that the Sunspot Cycle 25 that started last fall
could be one of the strongest since record-keeping began. The research team predicts
that Sunspot Cycle 25 will peak with a maximum sunspot number somewhere between
approximately 210 and 260, which would put the new cycle in the company of the top
few ever observed. This prediction is based on new research and a theory that is still
being debated in the scientific community.
Dr. McIntosh will provide an update on solar activity and how it tracks with their new
predictions.
Open to the public. Feel free to join for all or part of the meeting.
